How to Identify the Correct Rubber Track

Finding the correct replacement rubber track starts with identifying the track size. In most cases, you can determine the correct size by measuring three important things: width, pitch, and the number of links.

These measurements work together to create the rubber track size used when identifying a replacement track. Taking the measurements carefully can help you find the right track for your machine and avoid ordering the wrong size.

1. Rubber Track Width

How to measure rubber track width in millimeters

Measure Across the Width of the Track

The rubber track width is the measurement from one side of the track to the other. This measurement is normally taken across the top of the track and is recorded in millimeters (mm).

Place your tape measure across the track and measure from the outside edge on one side to the outside edge on the opposite side. Record the measurement as accurately as possible.

Width example: If the track measures approximately 180 mm from side to side, the width portion of the track size is 180 mm.

Measure From the Center of One Drive Lug to the Next

Rubber track pitch is the distance from the center of one drive lug to the center of the next drive lug.

To measure pitch, place your tape measure on the inside of the rubber track. Start at the center of one drive lug and measure to the center of the drive lug directly next to it.

Pitch is also recorded in millimeters (mm). Because the measurement is taken from lug center to lug center, it is important to use the same reference point on both drive lugs.

Important: Pitch is an inside-track measurement. Measuring from the outside edges of the lugs can give you an incorrect result.

3. Rubber Track Links

How to count rubber track drive lugs or links

Count the Drive Lugs Around the Track

The number of links is the total number of drive lugs around the inside of the rubber track.

One simple way to count the links is to mark one drive lug as your starting point. Then count each drive lug as you work your way around the entire track until you return to the marked lug.

Count carefully and make sure you complete the entire circumference of the track. The final number is the link count used as the third part of the rubber track size.

Your Rubber Track Size

Once you have the width, pitch, and link count, you can combine the three measurements to identify the rubber track size.

180 × 72 × 37

In this example, the track is 180 mm wide, has a 72 mm pitch, and has 37 drive lugs or links.

How Rubber Track Sizes Are Written

Rubber track sizes are normally written in the order of: Width × Pitch × Links.

180

Width: 180 mm across the track.

72

Pitch: 72 mm from the center of one drive lug to the next.

37

Links: 37 drive lugs around the inside of the track.

Before Ordering Replacement Rubber Tracks

Measuring your existing rubber track is a useful way to identify the track size, but the machine make and model are also important when confirming the correct replacement track. Some machines can use more than one track size depending on the machine configuration.

Before ordering, compare your measurements with the machine information and track size shown for the replacement track. If you are unsure about any of the measurements, contact us and provide your machine make and model along with the measurements you were able to obtain.
